As we are in the midst of this Fall season and Winter is peering around the corner, I am stuck on the topic of “Change.” I know the election has long been over and our President’s campaign drilled this point home. However, we can all attest that things change whether we like the modification or not.

Emissions trading and your carbon footprint

Here it comes again. Every few years it seems there is another issue that comes along and changes the way we are doing things in the building operations game.We have had IAQ, ADA, Y2K, Mold, asbestos, CFCs — the list goes on. It looks as if emissions trading of some sort is going to become the next set of issues the engineer has to deal with. You might have heard the buzzwords already. “Cap and Trade” or “Baseline and Credit,” “Sustainability,” “Carbon Offsets,” or “Carbon Footprint.”

What is that stuff, and why does it matter to the building engineer?
